Carey Wheeler - Clinical Myotherapy

Obtaining a Bachelors Degree in Clinical Myotherapy and combining that knowledge with my experience in strength and conditioning was a game changer for how I would go on to practice as a myotherapist.

What I've done with that knowledge:

This journey was necessary because I always felt that the treatment I had been receiving was incomplete. I tried physiotherapy, osteopathy, chirporactic and remedial massage approaches and gave each therapists approach the value it deserved. But I knew that the treatments I had received were missing something. Getting temporary relief from my pain was nice but I still felt weak and vulnerable. I still felt as though I was not in control of my own wellbeing.

My evolved treatment philosophy is built on my own successes and failures as a pain sufferer. Experiencing these has allowed me build GPTC with confidence and with an approach that I wish that I was given. Ultimately, I know the lows and I know what it takes to get to the highs. My back pain and shoulder issues are well behind me now, along with the weakness and vulnerability that I used to feel.

Why I'm here doing what I do:
Along with many other 'gym feats', I have deadlifted more than 200kg and squatted more than 180kg. My physical health allows me to live a life where exploring and learning new things is an every day adventure. I surf, rock climb, play golf, skateboard, lift weights, run and enjoy a variety of hobbies. Every day I am thankful for being able to help people also experience these types of changes. Rest assured that helping people move from suffering to succeeding and living more fully is a true pleasure for me.

I studied pain, exercise and rehabilitation because I wanted to be in control of my own health. Being at the mercy of my injuries and limitations was frustrating and made me feel helpless. So, I became a Clinical Myotherapist because I want to help people in Geelong and the Surf Coast to take control of their health and wellbeing. I want everyone to be able to live the life they dream of without the burned of pain.

Who am I?
I am the owner of the Geelong Physical Therapy Centre and I have been practicing Myotherapy in Geelong since 2010. After growing up in New Zealand, I moved to Geelong in 2003. I moved here after amazing year living in Sweden as an exchange student with the Rotary Exchange Program.

These days I'm lucky enough to call Barwon Heads home. I have two wonderful kids and a wife who, luckily, finds my sense of humour endearing enough to want to keep me around. My story starts with being one of those kids who was always injury prone. I had shoulder issues that started when playing rugby and ankles that didn't tolerate basketball all that well. More on all of that below...

My injuries and ailments:

I suffered with significant shoulder issues through my teens and early twenties. At their worst I would dislocate my shoulder whilst I was asleep. Yuck! Furthermore, I once dislocated both shoulders at the same time when I was weightlifting in my home gym. Luckily the freezer and some ice packs and frozen peas were very nearby!

When I was 18 years old I had a snowboarding accident with a knock to the head. That incident ended up placing me in hospital with amnesia in a foreign country on the night of my 18th birthday. Later, I discovered a fractured vertebrae in my lower back due to that same injury. This led to nearly a decade of daily back pain, distress and frustration. On top of these issues I've had multiple ankle sprains from playing basketball and rugby. I also dislocated my right ankle a few years ago during a small fall when rock climbing. I've had a number of other issues that have come and gone over the years, but that covers the bulk of them!

What I've Learned:

Through these experiences I have been forced to learn first hand what it takes to overcome pain. It's also taught me how to manage and learn from the suffering that comes with not being able to do what you want, when you want. My journey with pain first led me to pursue studies in personal training and strength and conditioning. I felt weak and fragile because of my pain and I knew I wasn't going to be able to feel like myself again until that changed.

The passion and interest that I developed for understanding the human body and, moreover, pain lead me to then study Myotherapy.
